HOMILY OF SUNDAY IN THE 19TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A
1 Kings 19:9,11-13, Romans 9:1-5, Matthew 14:22-33
THEME: GOD, POWERFUL IN PEACEFUL CALM
Though God has the power to silent the storms that roll the sea, he speaks in peaceful calm. We see in the first reading today when He wanted to talk to Elijah, how He decided not to be in the fire. He chose not to be in the earthquake. But He concealed himself in the gentle breeze.
The same God, in his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, walked on the sea. He has power over nature because nature is the work of his hands. He bids us not to be afraid. He is never far away from all he has made.
Let us recognize him all our days. Walking on the sea, disciples thought it was a ghost, and they were terrified, “But at once Jesus called out to them, saying, ‘Courage! It is I! Do not be afraid.”
In our storms of life, God is present, though we may not feel anything so extraordinary. All we need is a simple faith in his presence. He is bigger than our troubles.
May our courage be built on him alone. Amen.
