HOMILY OF MONDAY IN THE 25TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A
Saints Cosmas and Damian, Martyrs
Saints Cosmas and Damian were third-century Christian martyrs who hailed from Asia Minor. Renowned for their selfless devotion to healing the sick and helping the less fortunate, they earned the moniker “the Unmercenaries” due to their refusal to accept payment for their medical services. Their unwavering faith and dedication to their Christian beliefs led to their persecution and eventual martyrdom. They continue to be venerated as symbols of compassion and service in the Christian tradition.

THEME: HANDLING FAMILY TIES
Charity begins at home. No matter what we do outside our home, we must never take our family members for granted. When things are getting tough, we will always have our family there to look after us. The mother and brothers of Jesus had special interest in Jesus because of the ties he had with them. They care for his well-being. They would never allow the stress of his ministry to break him down.
“The mother and the brothers of Jesus came looking for him, but they could not get to him because of the crowd. He was told, ‘Your mother and brothers are standing outside and want to see you.’ But he said in answer, ‘My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and put it into practice.”
Jesus used this occasion to teach us that true relationship with him is beyond blood line. He is God-made-man. An intimate relationship with him is a function of obedience to the Father who sent him.
However, Mary was the best example of those who hear the word of God and keep it. She said at the annunciation, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it done to me according to your word.” She never distanced herself from her son.
We pray that we will never swerve from doing the will of God and that our family will always be pillar of support for us in the actualization of our life goals. Amen.
