Homily of Tuesday 31st week in the Ordinary Time year B. 5th November, 2024
Theme: Having the mind of Christ
Texts: Phil 2:5-11, Lk 14:15-24
Dear friends in Christ, in today’s first reading, Paul begins by asking the people to have the mind of Christ. The question that will follow will be “what does it mean to have the mind of Christ?” Paul continues to explain it in the perspective of Jesus’ self-debasement, the self-emptying or kenosis whereby though he was in the form of God he didn’t count equality with God. There are actually two levels of this self-emptying. The first is in taking human nature, the second is taking the form of a slave to die.
Let us ask ourselves today, how many of us are ready to empty ourselves for another? How many of us would not count or consider our high esteem simply because we want the nerve? Many of us have placed ourselves so high that we cannot come low to assist our neighbors. This is not the mind of Christ.
From what Paul describes, we come to understand that having the mind of Christ is the same thing as having the attitude of Christ. The mind of Christ is found in our attitude. That attitude is of universal salvation. It is his will that all be saved. That is why in the gospel reading when those who were called started giving excuses, he asked that everyone in the streets be called. In Jesus, everyone is called to experience the love of God.
Dear friends, as you go out today, never deprive anyone of God’s love. Have the mind and attitude of Christ that nothing can limit the amount of love you show to others.
May the Lord bless His words in our hearts. Amen.
The Lord be with you
