HOW TO BE AN AUTHENTIC PREACHER

56

HOMILY OF TUESDAY OF THE SECOND WEEK OF LENT YEAR B

Isaiah 1:10.16-20, Matthew 23:1-12

THEME:  HOW TO BE AN AUTHENTIC PREACHER

We learn from our today’s gospel that, what we know and say, must find expression in what we do. And that the truth is greater than the one who tells it. With proper disposition and discernment, we can separate a speaker from the truth of what he tells. And if we are able to achieve this, a speaker’s life style will never discourage us from applying the knowledge which they pass across to us.

The Lord tells the crowd and his disciples, “The scribes and the Pharisee sit on Moses’ seat; so practice and observe whatever they tell you, but not what they do; for they preach, but do not practice.” Matthew 23:2-3

However, whether we are aware that our life style is separate from what we know or not, our life style has roles to play in instilling the ideals that we preach. Saying one thing and doing another, is a simple way of saying that what we preach is not practicable; that we are simply telling others out of duty.

May we always cooperate with the grace of God, that we may be an embodiment of the ideals which we preach. May our life style increase the courage of those who hang on the words of my mouth. And may the Lord help that we may be living examples for others to follow. Amen.
