Homily of Tuesday 30th week in the Ordinary Time year B. Tuesday 29th, 2024
Text: Ephesians 5:21-33, Luke 13:18-21
Dear friends, the principles of the kingdom of God are quite contrary to those of this world. In a world where people measure their strength through influence and affluence and thereby lording it over others, Christian principles call for humility. The strength of a Christian is in his or her humility. Humility is that Christian virtue that helps us to guide against pride which Lucifer adopted so as remain forever obedient to God. Again, obedience to God is what sets us apart from the world and we cannot do this unless we are humble.
In the first reading of today, St Paul tells us to be subject to one another out of reference for Christ. Wives are to be submissive to their husbands as the church is to Christ and husbands are to love their wives as Christ does to the Church. The life we live as Christians must be able to take the other into consideration. We must not win all the arguments. We do not need to tell the people that we are strong enough to count their wrongs. Out of love and reverence for Christ, we expect to learn to bear with others.
In the gospel reading, we see that there is nothing that can be compared to humility. Jesus uses the parable of the mustard see to illustrate the nature of the kingdom of God. Mustard seed is the smallest of the seeds in the forest. But when it is planted and it grows, it becomes the biggest of the trees and becomes shelter to the birds of the air.
People may want to despise you because of your humility. They may want to disregard you. But do not give up on humility. It is the virtue that easily gets grace over Satan. Today dear friends, LEARN TO BE HUMBLE LEST YOU STUMBLE
May the Lord bless His words in our hearts. Amen.
The Lord be with you.
