ON A RIDE WITH JESUS

105

HOMILY, 19TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A

1Kings 19:9a.11-13a, Romans 9:1-5, Matthew 14:22-23

When we trust in the Lord and obey him, he sheds his glory on our ways. When we believe in God’s words and follow his instructions, no storm of life can break us down. As long as we focus on God who calls us, we are rest secured.

Tossed by the wave of the sea, the disciples of Jesus were afraid. Their fear took another turn when they saw Jesus walking upon the sea, thinking that he was a ghost. Peter’s trust in Jesus was great. He was ever ready to obey Jesus, but his wavering heart was his problem. He quickly obeyed Jesus when he told him to come but momentarily.

“The moment he saw the wind, he was afraid and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me “Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him saying to him, O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him saying; truly you are the Son of God.”

It is either we trust in God’s word or we are crushed by our challenges. If we believe in God’s presence, we need not fear. He will see us through the sea of life and guide us through the darkest valleys. As long as we do not look sideways or lose focus, the strength to forge ahead will always be there.

PRAYER
O Lord help me to believe more in your word above the problems that stare at me in the face. Thy kingdom come.

  • Let me add a few words to Fr.’s reflections: Peter did not simply walk on the water. He walked on the word of Jesus “Come!” He started sinking when he abandoned that word and started looking at the circumstances around him. How often we sink in life situations when we forget that man shall not live by bread alone but by EVERY WORD that comes out of the mouth of God.
