We learn in today’s gospel, that we should embrace sincerity of life. True happiness is gained when we authentically express our real feelings, rather than hiding behind the mask of deception. Double life is too expensive to live. The game of hide and seek takes a lot of energy. The Lord invites us to take care lest we yoke ourselves with the wrong set of people who pretend to be what they are not. They can lead us astray.
The Yeast of the Pharisees.
The Lord warned his disciples about the “yeast of the Pharisees,” which means their hypocrisy. The Pharisees were people who pretended to be very good and religious on the outside, but inside, they were not true to themselves. Jesus wanted his disciples and all of us to be sincere and real, not hiding our true feelings and intentions.
Moreover, Jesus told his disciples that everything hidden would one day come into the open. So, whatever we say secretly will be known eventually. It’s like saying, “You can’t hide the truth forever.” The things we whisper in the dark will be heard in the light of day, and what we keep hidden will be revealed. God sees all we do.
A take home lesson on sincerity
This passage teaches us the importance of honesty and sincerity. We should be genuine, both in our words and actions. Instead of pretending to be something we are not, we should be true to ourselves and to God.
In our lives, we should strive to live without hiding our true selves. It’s essential to be open and honest, as hiding the truth will eventually come to light. Jesus encourages us to be real, for in truth, we find freedom and a closer connection with God.
May sincerity be our cloak. And we do not die in oblivion behind the mask of deception. Amen
