On the 4th of October 2024, the Spiritans in Britain marked 120 years of existence. This is a milestone that reflects the incredible journey and accomplishments of British Province. The Province has witnessed tremendous growth and development, with significant contributions made to mission work in the world, especially in Africa. From the early days, passionate and selfless missionaries dedicated their time and energy to spreading the gospel, a mission that continues to bear fruit today. The influence of these early missionaries in Africa is evident in the growing number of African Spiritans now serving in the British Province. This celebration is not just a recognition of the past but also a reflection on God’s grace, which has guided the Spiritans from their humble beginnings through the commitment of both the founding fathers and those who followed in their footsteps.
The 120th-anniversary celebration began on Friday, October 4th, at 9:30 am, with the arrival and registration of attendees, accompanied by coffee, croissants, and an icebreaker quiz. Fr. Ugo Ikwuka, the Provincial Superior, officially opened the event at 10:00 am with his welcoming remarks, followed by talks from various members. The program was interspersed with scriptural readings and hymns. These added the appropriate spiritual dimension to the occasion.
However, the first session featured a talk by Fr. Eamon Mulcahy, CSSp, titled “Foundation Stones: Prior Park to Castlehead – The Hidden Story.” He dwelt on the history of Spiritans in Uk from dot to wave. This was followed by a second session, led by Fr. Mark Connolly and John Kitchen, which discussed the early formation and mission in places like Bickley, Upton, and Wellsborough, focusing on how the province was born. In the third session, Fr. John McFadden, CSSp, delivered a talk titled “The Call of Andrew: Scotland the Brave,” presented by Fr. Philip Marsh, CSSp. Fr. Kenneth Okoli, CSSp, led the fourth session with a presentation on “Mission Comes Home: New Initiatives Since 2000 Kairos,” highlighting developments such as Lay Spiritans, youth outreach, and ministry to migrants.
The day’s presentations concluded with a talk by the Superior General, Fr. Alain Mayama, on “Mission Lived in the Congregation.” In his address, among others, the Superior General called for a renewed dedication to the Spiritan mission, emphasising the importance of retelling the founding stories of the congregation at both the global and provincial levels. He urged all Spiritan provinces to embrace financial solidarity and shared responsibility for supporting the formation of candidates for the priesthood. The Superior General also advocated for enhancing the quality of training and encouraged members to actively participate in formation programs, expressing the need for greater readiness to join formation teams in seminaries
After a short break, the celebration culminated with the Holy Eucharist at 5:00 pm. The Superior General presided over the Mass, laying more emphasis on the need for increased dedication to shaping the future of the congregation in an ever-changing world. He highlighted the importance of adapting to new challenges while remaining committed to the Spiritan mission, urging members to focus on building a resilient and vibrant future for the congregation.
Some confreres marked personal milestones, including birthdays, priestly anniversaries, and the anniversary of first religious profession. The day ended with a buffet dinner at 6:30 pm, closing the day’s joyful celebrations.
