There are many kinds of leadership in the world that has contributed in shaping the world the way it is today. From harsh and iron leaders to gentle and loving leaders. Thus: we have war leaders, political leaders, business leaders, education leaders, sports leaders, music leaders, church leaders, et cetera. One can choose any of the above as a leader to achieve one’s dream and shape one’s territory. However, in this write up we shall be looking at the method used by St. Peter the first Pope and leader of the Catholic Church.
Today’s feast called the chair of St. Peter talks about a relic of wooden throne belonging to St. Peter. He was the leader of the early Christians in Rome and of course the first Pope. This Chair of St. Peter is a symbol that reminds us of how Jesus made Peter a leader and gave him the special task of caring for the early Christians in love so that they all are united.
John 21:15-17 says
“So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.
He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep”
From the above, We Christians who are followers of St. Peter are enjoined by today’s celebration to emulate St. Peter anywhere we are placed as leaders so that with this loving leadership method we can make the world not only a safe and better place for everyone but a home where everyone can live in peace, love and understanding.
We call on God to help us and St. Peter to intercede for us through Christ our Lord. Amen
