HOMILY FOR THURSDAY OF THIRTY SECOND WEEK IN THE ORDINARY TIME YEAR B
(Philemon 1:7-20,Psalm 145:7-10, Luke 17:20-25). Luke 17:20-25
Jesus has often been asked specific questions by the scribes and Pharisees for various reasons. These questions are either to trap Him or to get His opinion on certain truth.
In the gospel, the Pharisees asked Jesus a question about the time the kingdom of God will come and Jesus gave this answer. Jesus said ‘the coming of the kingdom of God does not admit of observation and there will be no one to say, “Look here! Look there!” For, you must know, the kingdom of God is among you.’
Going further, Jesus warns His disciples not to be deceived by false prophecies and teachers who would claim to know the hour of the coming of God’s kingdom. Jesus also, prophesied that, before the coming of God’s kingdom, He must be rejected, suffer and die in hands of His beloved creatures. The suffering and death of Jesus opens up for us the salvation promised to us by God. Jesus is warning us also not to be deceived by false prophets.
The coming of God’s kingdom remains a mystery to everyone of us till date. But the very fact is that, Jesus made it clear to us that the kingdom of God is already amongst us.
How do we get to that kingdom? This is something we must find out by ourselves. To do this, we must be consistent in our practice of Christian virtues, that is, treating everyone with the love and mercy that they deserved. In that way, we are not to be bothered to have knowledge of when God will come because we have already possessed something of God’s nature.
Let us asked ourselves, if the kingdom of God was to come today, can we be found worthy among the saints? How do we live our lives knowing that, no one knows when their end will come? Let us reflect on these points and adjust ourselves, so that we should not be caught unaware when the time comes. Peace be with you.
