The Mother of the God-made-Man

75

Todays’ solemnity is celebrated in honour of Mary’s divine motherhood and her essential role in the mystery of salvation as the mother of Jesus Christ, who is both God and man. The title of Mary as the “Mother of God” (Theotokos) was affirmed at the Council of Ephesus in 431 AD, when the church dwelt heavily on her understanding of Christ’s dual nature; fully divine and fully human. Narrowing her place down only to her role as a mother of the man Jesus may undermine the understanding of Christ’ Divinity. Hence this celebration has more focus on the personhood of Jesus as God-made-man to live among us.

Moreover, beginning the year with the priestly blessing, by invoking God’s peace brings us close to the role of Mary as the channel through which the Prince of peace came to the world.

“The Lord spoke to Moses and said, ‘Say this to Aaron and his sons: “This is how you are to bless the sons of Israel. You shall say to them:May the Lord bless you and keep you.May the Lord let his face shine on you and be gracious to you.May the Lord uncover his face to you and bring you peace.” This is how they are to call down my name on the sons of Israel, and I will bless them.”

Mary was a woman who, through her profound encounter with the angel, was able to embrace and ponder deeply all that was spoken about the baby Jesus. When others were astonished, she simply treasured all in her heart. Beginning the year with her is an invitation to learn from her the knowledge of her Son, through whom she became the mother of all believers.

As we invoke God’s peace this New Year, may the blessed Mother continue to intercede for us. Amen.
