THE MYSTERY OF ONE SOUL IN TWO BODIES

61

HOMILY OF TUESDAY O THE 30TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A

Eph 5:21-33, Luke 13:15-21

Marriage institution as of the relationship between Christ and the church is a mystery in which one soul can comfortably live in two bodies. In any true marital union, any stab on love is violence both against the offender and the offended. A man who acts in an unkind manner against his wife is fundamentally wounding himself. Likewise, a woman who throws the flowers of her marital love into the dust bin is working for her own ruin.

“St Paul said in today’s’ first reading,

He who loves his wife loves himself. For no man ever hates his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”

Hence, any disregard for one’s spouse is a disregard to oneself.

It is better to stay perpetually at the foot of a cliff than to climb it to the top and fall from the height. It is better not to marry than marry and live a “cell-like” life. It is a clarion call on all married people to honour their marital covenant and preserve the love that form a peaceful home.

May the Lord, from whom every family takes its name strengthen our families and give us the stamina to weather the storms that may besiege the peace of our homes. Amen.
