THE STRENGTH OF OUR WORDS, Fr Oluwafemi Victor Orilua CSSp

78

HOMILY OF WEDNESDAY IN THE 21ST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A

1 Thessalonians 2:9-13, Matthew 23:27-32

THEME: THE STRENGTH OF OUR WORDS.

As ministers or followers of Christ, our words may possess beauty and eloquence, they won’t yield enduring results in people’s lives unless they are supported by our imitation of Christ. This is because they lack the anointing that emanates from the source of salvation. We cannot give what we don’t have. The power of our words is derived from the strength of  character which we build in our following of Christ.

Jesus, in the gospel, rebuke the Scribes and the Pharisees for their hypocrisy. He said,

Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You who are like whitewashed tombs that look handsome on the outside, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and every kind of corruption. In the same way you appear to people from the outside like good honest men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.”

In the first reading, Paul commended the Thessalonians for receiving the words of God as it is. “Another reason why we constantly thank God for you is that as soon as you heard the message that we brought you as God’s message, you accepted it for what it really is, God’s message and not some human thinking; and it is still a living power among you who believe it.”

We can give more life to our profession of faith by living by what we preach. May we always strive to lead lives worthy of our Christian calling. Amen.
