HOMILY OF ASH WEDNESDAY, 2021
Joel 2;12-18, 2 Cor 5:20,6:2, Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18
THEME: LENTEN SEASON: OUR JOURNEY BACK TO GOD
Ash Wednesday ushers us into the 40 days of reflection and return to God. This day begins the season of Lent. On this day, there is ceremony of blessing and imposition of ashes.
“The act of putting on ashes symbolises our fragility and mortality as well as our need to be redeemed by the mercy of God.” [Daily Missal pg 184.]
We are expected to fast pray and give alms as means of helping ourselves to get the spiritual benefits of this season of journey back to God. These observances are not end in themselves. Rather, they are means to an end. Hence, we must strive daily to work on our characters and do all within our capacity to walk in the ways of the Lord. This is the season when we double our efforts to work towards the remaking of our minds so that our nature may be transformed.
May the Lord accept us and make us worthy of redemption through Christ our Lord. Amen.
